Exciting News!

Sunday, April 28th, 2013

It’s been some time since I’ve added to the Blog as things have been really crazy here in the shop. And I’ve been concentrating on an adventure I’ve wanted to begin for some time and the time is NOW!

This new undertaking really is the result of comments many of you made a couple of years ago about a Customer Gallery entry. When you scroll down and see the photo you’ll remember this design and you may well be one of the many stitchers who asked for the chart. It’s taken me a while to get to the point where I feel comfortable making this step but here we go. The photo below is a photo of the first design to be published and distributed by APH~Designs, our new design company! Right now there are a dozen or more on the list to be released so stay tuned!

In the meantime please enjoy Reader’s Paradise  with special pride knowing it was comments by readers of the blog that brought it into being. Of course you can now purchase your copy of the chart! Just click here to place your order.

Reader's Paradise by Joan Hersherberger

The verse is “I have always imagined that paradise will be a kind of library”

We stitched the model on White 32ct Belfast Linen with DMC Floss and Kreinik #4 Braid and used our family member’s names on the books. You could use your family or perhaps your favorite authors or your favorite titles. This is an easy design to make all your own as we include an alphabet in two sizes and a grid for charting the words you want.  The #4 Braid is color 002. If you have a good collection of DMC you may well have all the threads you need to stitch this as it doesn’t take a lot of each color. If you need a list just let me know and I’ll email it to you. Order a fat eighth of the Belfast or if you prefer Aida, a fat quarter of 16ct.

I hope you enjoy this first offering and watch for more coming soon.

Let me tell you about … The Flag

Sunday, February 12th, 2012

In January last year I posted a picture of a needlepoint American Flag that I stitched for Mr. D and gave an explanation of how I created the piece. Since then he framed the flag and his eagle and it’s been hanging in the shop. Yesterday I realized I’d never shown you what he did with the piece so here it is.

I love this piece!

I love this piece!

He did an awesome job of framing this design and including the flag just made it all the better. He has such great ideas about how to compose a piece!

As you probably remember, the flag is stitched on 18m canvas with Trio by brown paper packages and Kreinik Braid. Let me know about pieces you’ve created for unusual applications or just because your best friend wanted it!

January 2012 Newsletter

Thursday, January 26th, 2012

It’s been a while since I wrote a Newsletter so take a look at the fun beaded fobs I’ve stitched since Fall Hideaway.

Tracey of Threaded Needle Designs created these two fun fobs!

Tracey of Threaded Needle Designs created these two fun fobs!

See the kits along with a couple more Tracey has designed here. I had a great time with these, they went quickly so I wasn’t overwhelmed but were enough of a challenge to keep me beading! We will have a class in even count Peyote Stitch on Tuesday, March 20th from 10am to Noon or from 2pm to 4pm. You choose one of the kits from the fobs on the Threaded Needle Designs page. Cost of the kit pays your class fee. You need to sign up by Monday March 12th.

We still have room for a few more stitchers at Needlework Hideaway. See the great classes we’re offering this time here.

February 17 and 18 we will be having our “delayed” Christmas Party. As you know we ran out of time in December so we’ve decided to celebrate our great customers with a Party in February. Lots of items on sale, lots! The following weekend is Nashville Market so we need to move out inventory to make room for the new I’ll bring back. Admission to the Party will be a food item to be donated to the Salvation Army. Watch for more information on what will be on sale and how the website customers can participate!

We have a Fern Ridge trunk show here now with the new items we don’t even have on the website yet! Come see…

Lots of interesting things going on in the needlework world recently so I thought I’d share. Big, big news is the results of the auction at Sotheby’s. Read all about it in the New York Times.

Kreinik has some great free patterns you can download.  See them on Kreinik’s site.

The needlework world lost a icon in December. Read about this larger than life figure, Erica Wilson again in the New York Times.

Stitcher’s Village is hosting a designer chat with Tracy Horner of Ink Circles on Saturday Jan. 28th at 9pm Eastern. Go to sign up on the Stitcher’s Village site.

Until next time, keep stitching!

Here's a sneak peek!

Here's a sneak peek!

Lots of fun things going on in the next few months. Tracey and I are participating in Celebration of Needlework in St. Charles, Missouri in September. You can see the information about this fun consumer show at Celebration of Needlework. Still plenty of time to register. Do you remember the Spirit of Cross Stitch events? This is the same type of event! Tracey is teaching a class on Peyote Stitch so if you’ve wanted to get started with that technique this is the perfect time to begin. She’s also bringing her Threaded Needle Designs Trunk Show so come participate in this great stitcher’s event.

Of course Needlework Hideaway is just a few months away, we’re counting the days now! The classes are up on the website so visit Needlework Hideaway to see them. We have two new teachers this time and are excited to add them to your choices. Ruby Bailey will teach a beautiful beaded bracelet and Libby Roleson will teach a Kumihimo Bracelet and a Basic Earring class. We’ve set our 2012 schedule and will have contracts with the Red Apple Inn soon.

We are changing the days and hours at the shop beginning the week of August 22nd. I’m off to ANG National Seminar in San Antonio, TX and Mr. D is keeping the shop open for you on Thurs., Friday, and Saturday from 10am to 5pm. These hours will be in effect until further notice but remember that we’ll open up for you when you need to come with just a phone call or email to make arrangements for that. Mail order will be handled just as always so your orders will go out as usual.

We’ve added a new Thread of the Month Club that came to us as a suggestion from a customer. Each month I’ll chose an overdyed thread and add a variety of threads to complement it to create a collection that can go directly into a project! We’ll choose from across the lines of threads we carry so you may get a collection based on Waterlilies or on ThreadworX or on Overture that may include Kreinik, Rainbow Gallery, Caron Collection, DMC, Bella Lusso, Accentuate, Trebizond, Weeks Dye Works, The Gentle Art… you get the idea, if the threads work together you’ll get them! We’re looking forward to this Collection so sign up today! Here’s where you can see them.

I can hardly wait until we actually get to Seminar as I’ve been stitching the ANG Stitch of the Month a little ahead at the request of the Board and am all finished but can’t show you until they are shown at Seminar. All the Area Representatives are working on these so the excitement is building to see them finished. Mr. D is framing mine next week and I’m going to take a photo so that I can post it here as soon as we get the go ahead!!

Keep cool and keep stitching,

Pat

What you can do with all these Threads!

Friday, June 24th, 2011

I wanted to share some pictures sent to me by a very creative customer. She stitches on cards and shares those cards with her friends and family, lucky them!

Card Embroidery 1

Each card is either her adaptation of an existing design or an original by her using all types of threads. They are lovely as they are, and would be great fun to stitch with threads like Rainbow Gallery, Caron Collection, ThreadworX or Kreinik to name a very few.

Card Embroidery 3

Don’t they just make your fingers itch for a needle?

This one is done with a lovely metallic. How elegant!

When a new use of the threads comes along I can hardly wait to give it a try.

This one is done with Stem Stitch.

Ok, one more!

Look at that sparkle!

Look at that sparkle!

As amazing as these are, what if she added buttons or beads? For some a Just Another Button Company button would be perfect, for others Mill Hill’s Treasures would add sparkle and of course either Delicas or Seed Beads would be exciting!

So what are you working on now? Please share with the group what’s fun and exciting in your stitching life!

Thanks,

Pat

Let me tell you about… what’s stitchin’ this week

Friday, January 21st, 2011

I’ve had a busy stitching week! Do you start a new project each time you finish one? I’ve been known to start a new project before I finish the one I’m working on and then pile up a bunch of started projects beside my chair and go through them and stitch a bit on each one. Perhaps a problem staying focused?

This week I’m working on the ornament I designed for the Kreinik Ornament Finishing Frames so I can get the chart ready to sell. I’ve found that I stitched it a bit different from the way I designed it, but I like the way the tree turned out so I’ll rechart the design to match the stitching. I also found that I need some type of base for the piece so I’m adding snow drifts for the tree and packages to sit on.  This is the first time I’ve worked on silk gauze and I’m pleased to discover that it is really easy to see. Surprising since it’s 30ct over one but, other than placing a dark fabric on my lap, it has been a fun stitch with no extra equipment needed. I’ve used specialty stitches and that makes the work go quickly, I think I have about 8 hours stitching time so far and that includes ripping out the candle flames because I found a color I think works better.  Let me know what you think!

Here we are ready to determine where the snow drifts belong.

Here we are ready to determine where the snow drifts belong.

The other piece I’ve spent some time on this week is the EGA Group Correspondence Course I’m stitching along with the Blytheville, Arkansas group. The piece is White Queen, a Pulled and Drawn Thread design. I’m waiting for permission from the designer and will post a photo as soon as I get that. You’ll hear more about this design as time goes along but I’m almost finished with January’s assignment! In the meantime, read about EGA in this article.

Here’s a piece I actually finished this week. As a matter of fact it was finished at 1:30am in one of the nights that sleep eluded me. This was fun! and will become a class in the shop. It’s by Fern Ridge and is on the site here.

I made a few changes in arrangement but really enjoyed this one!

Needlework Hideaway classes are posted on the website. Take a look and sign up to join us this Spring.  Be sure to let me know what you’re stitching on and what you’ve finished lately!

Until next time, keep stitching…

Let me tell you about … the Flag!

Tuesday, January 11th, 2011

Mr. D is framing  an awesome picture of a bald eagle in flight. This piece is for him so he decided he wanted an American Flag at the base of the picture and left enough room in the frame for that. Then came the search for a flag to fit the space. Frustrating! All were either too big or too small. After several stores we bought a small flag that was accurate (you’d be surprised how many flags out there either don’t have the right number of stars or the proportions are all wrong) and reduced it on the copy machine until we had the size he needed.

Of course, the copy was not “pretty” enough for the framed piece so I decided to stitch a flag for him. I was surprised how easy it was to lay this out, especially as we had the size we wanted already. All I had to do was compare the width of the stripes to the 18m canvas and get the length of the flag and the blue box that contains the stars marked out.

I used Trio by brown paper packages for the red, white, and blue and Kreinik #4 Braid in 032 for the stars. The stripes are Slanted Gobelin over 3 threads, the blue is Basketweave and the Stars are Cross Stitch added after the blue was stitched. Because this was to be framed I added one Tent Stitch construction row. I think I have about 5 hours of stitching time in this but I was stitching while we watched TV for a couple of evenings and the Sunday Talk Shows so how much was concentrated stitching is up for grabs.

This was a fun project and my best friend is happy.  What more can you ask for?

January, 2011 Newsletter

Thursday, January 6th, 2011

We had so much fun last year with the 15th Anniversary Celebration I thought we would try another monthly theme. For January all in stock Just Nan products are on sale 20% off. Purchase the materials you need to complete the designs at the same time and you’ll get 20% off that as well! Just let us know in the notes section of the shopping cart that you want us to kit the pieces you choose and we’ll let you know the cost before shipping. I’ve just gone through the shop, pulled all the Just Nan so it’s right up front for the local shoppers and made sure that everything on the website is in stock. We do have a limited number of most of the designs so shop early because we’ll be pulling them off the site as they sell out. Here’s a hint, type Just Nan in the search window as she has some beautiful charms as well as the leaflets, you won’t want to miss those.

If you enjoy seeing unusual applications of needlework you’re going to enjoy looking at the Crochet Coral Reef Be sure to click on the video to hear all about how this amazing project came into being.

I am hoping to post more often to this blog this year and to share what I’m working on with all of you. Please feel free to comment on any posts you see here. I finished this piece on January 1, 2011. Sure would like to finish something every month this year!

Tracey designed this for the Fall, 2010 Needlework Hideaway!

This time of year most people decide to work on getting organized. If you’re one who makes that decision, you’ll get help cataloging your stitching books at Library Thing. This site is good for anything in your library, just be sure to save some stitching time as well.

Now some not so great news! New pricing on DMC products beginning February 1. We are 10¢ below suggested retail on floss now but with the increase we’re not going to be able to stay at 49¢ so order now if you need floss.  DMC Perle #3 and #5 will increase from $1.39 to $1.45 which will affect the kits for the From Nancy’s Needle designs as well so take a look at all of those and make your choices while you can get them for the current price.

Just so we don’t end on that note,  I found a beautiful new free chart from Passione Ricamo that I think you’ll like. Click here and download the chart.

Scroll on down to see the winner of the Ornament Design Contest, it’s incredible! And, the kit will be ready soon so you can create one for yourself. You’ll find the Kreinik  Finishing Kit on the Fabric (kit with silk gauze) page or the Finishing (kit without the silk gauze) page.

Until next time, keep stitchin’ and come see us!

November Newsletter

Tuesday, November 23rd, 2010

The holiday season is upon us and I know you’re all really busy but I hope you’ll take the time to visit the shop the first weekend in December for our annual customer appreciation Christmas Party. This year we’ll be playing two days, Friday December 3rd and Saturday December 4th. Christmas cookies, punch or hot chocolate (depending on the weather) and fun sharing of the holiday cheer! Bring a donation to the Red Cross (we’re looking for personal grooming items such as soap, shampoo, lotions, etc) and exchange it for a bag of goodies (think fabric, threads, patterns, etc).  The fun starts at 2pm and runs until 5pm each day. We’ll miss you if you’re not here so be sure to come, if only for a few minutes.

Take a look at this amazing piece of needlework and especially at the price received when it sold. Crazy Quilting is a favorite of mine and how exciting that someone recognized the quality of the work and valued it this much. My only thought was “You go Girl!”.

Only a few more days left to enter your design in the Kreinik Ornament design contest. We have a couple of great designs in already and your’s is just what we need. A photo of your stitched piece, the chart, of whatever you have that you can get to us via email or snail mail by the December 1st deadline will get you entered! Click here and scroll down to the second entry to see the example I charted out in just a few minutes. This doesn’t have to be hard, just fun. Come on, join in!

Stitcher’s Village has added a message board and chat room to the village. See those and sign up here.

Thanks to all of you who sent ornaments for the Art Center tree! We will decorate today so I’ll try to post a photo of the finished tree on the Blog later this week. When you place an order or visit the shop and spend more than $25 we’ll include a kit for a Christmas Ornament in your package. If you stitch the ornament and return it for the tree next year we’ll give a 10% discount on  purchases that day.

Have a beautiful holiday season filled with family, friends, good food, music, and laughter.  Happy Thanksgiving!

Pat
