Hints for stitching with hand dyed threads…

Monday, August 13th, 2012

I’ve had many people ask about the hand dyed threads and how to best use them so I thought I’d just share a few hints with all of you.

Whether you choose subtle colors or dramatic colors, hand dyed threads are a treat to use!

Whether you choose subtle colors or dramatic colors, hand dyed threads are a treat to use!

First and most important, you cannot depend on the hand dyed threads to be color safe so approach all your work with that in mind.  You may well not be able to wash your piece after stitching so keeping it clean is the most important thing you can do to insure a successful project. Even using too much steam in pressing can cause bleeding problems so be sure to press your fabric to remove any fold lines before stitching.

Some thread companies recommend soaking out the excess dye before using the thread. I’ve not done that but if you’re really concerned I suggest you follow their recommendations.

Now don’t decide you will not use hand dyed threads because of bleeding! There are ways to rescue a piece where the threads have bled and it’s a simple process.  The bleeding you may see is merely the excess dye rinsing out of the thread. Not a problem unless you allow the piece to dry before taking care of it. The most important thing you can do is catch the problem before the piece dries and the dye sets, so before the piece has the opportunity to dry out, immerse it in ice cold water and soak out any of the bleeding color. Change the water and add more ice a couple of times per day as needed until the excess color has soaked away. This treatment will not damage the piece so long as all the materials are cold water safe as most of the materials we stitch with are.

Once the bleeding has been soaked away wrap the piece in a thick towel and let it set for an hour to allow the towel to absorb some of the moisture.  Check again to be sure color is not showing on the fabric where dye might have bled. If you have more color soak again and repeat the process. When the color is controlled, lay the piece face down on a thick pad (I use a double terry towel) and press it dry. You may have to change the pad a couple of times before you can get the piece dry but pressing this way will remove any wrinkles from the fabric and allow the stitches to raise above it nicely. Do not press over the stitches on the right side of the piece as that will flatten them.

If you don’t have a problem with bleeding you’re ready to press your piece after completion and before adding embellishments. If you bring your pieces here for framing you don’t have to worry about pressing, we’ll do that for you. If you frame yourself or take it somewhere else for framing be sure to press before hand. Lay the piece face down on the pad and press until you’ve pressed out the wrinkles in the fabric. Take real care with steam as it can cause the threads to bleed. If you’re taking your piece to a frame shop be sure they know that you’ve used hand dyed threads with the potential to bleed in case they decide to steam the piece.

Now that we’ve gotten the problems with hand dyed threads taken care of let’s talk about the fun of these great threads. The effects you can achieve with them are exciting. If you complete each cross stitch as you go (English method of cross stitch) you will see fun striping in the larger areas. Subtle color changes will create subtle stripes and distinct color changes will create distinct stripes. Stitching cross stitch with the first half across a line and the second half back (Danish method of cross stitch) will create a more mottled effect. Other stitches give other interesting effects, give them a try and see what you can create with this fun thread.

Weekend Project!

So much fun!

So much fun!

When a piece can be stitched by me in a weekend you know it’s a quick to stitch piece. The girls tell me I’m the slowest stitcher they know! Now of course, it was Super Bowl weekend and we spent a good bit of time in front of the TV but I did get this one done from Saturday evening until Monday morning. I stitched for about an hour here with the Saturday Stitchers and then took it home. Fun to stitch and cute, you’ll stitch with Weeks Dye Works and Gentle Art overdyed floss.

This one does not scream Valentine even if it would be perfect for that. We’re putting it in the top of a box Mr. D made and perhaps giving it to one of our girls for a gift! I’ll post a photo when it’s in the box.

Lots of fun things going on in the next few months. Tracey and I are participating in Celebration of Needlework in St. Charles, Missouri in September. You can see the information about this fun consumer show at Celebration of Needlework. Still plenty of time to register. Do you remember the Spirit of Cross Stitch events? This is the same type of event! Tracey is teaching a class on Peyote Stitch so if you’ve wanted to get started with that technique this is the perfect time to begin. She’s also bringing her Threaded Needle Designs Trunk Show so come participate in this great stitcher’s event.

Of course Needlework Hideaway is just a few months away, we’re counting the days now! The classes are up on the website so visit Needlework Hideaway to see them. We have two new teachers this time and are excited to add them to your choices. Ruby Bailey will teach a beautiful beaded bracelet and Libby Roleson will teach a Kumihimo Bracelet and a Basic Earring class. We’ve set our 2012 schedule and will have contracts with the Red Apple Inn soon.

We are changing the days and hours at the shop beginning the week of August 22nd. I’m off to ANG National Seminar in San Antonio, TX and Mr. D is keeping the shop open for you on Thurs., Friday, and Saturday from 10am to 5pm. These hours will be in effect until further notice but remember that we’ll open up for you when you need to come with just a phone call or email to make arrangements for that. Mail order will be handled just as always so your orders will go out as usual.

We’ve added a new Thread of the Month Club that came to us as a suggestion from a customer. Each month I’ll chose an overdyed thread and add a variety of threads to complement it to create a collection that can go directly into a project! We’ll choose from across the lines of threads we carry so you may get a collection based on Waterlilies or on ThreadworX or on Overture that may include Kreinik, Rainbow Gallery, Caron Collection, DMC, Bella Lusso, Accentuate, Trebizond, Weeks Dye Works, The Gentle Art… you get the idea, if the threads work together you’ll get them! We’re looking forward to this Collection so sign up today! Here’s where you can see them.

I can hardly wait until we actually get to Seminar as I’ve been stitching the ANG Stitch of the Month a little ahead at the request of the Board and am all finished but can’t show you until they are shown at Seminar. All the Area Representatives are working on these so the excitement is building to see them finished. Mr. D is framing mine next week and I’m going to take a photo so that I can post it here as soon as we get the go ahead!!

Keep cool and keep stitching,

Pat

Ok, the heat is on! We’ve been above 100° for the last couple of days! Glad to be inside with my stitching…

I found this site with lovely stitched covers of Vogue Magazine and thought you might enjoy a look.

Vogue Covers

New colors of Gentle Art threads are in. Take a look here. Did you realize that any thread we carry is eligible for the Thread of the Month Club. Have a thread you’d like to collect? Just send me an email or give us a call at the shop and we’ll put together a TOMC for that thread. See the TOMC here.

We had a month long Yard Sale here in May but there are still a number of items left.  If you go to the home page and search Yard Sale you’ll see what’s here. I’ll be continuing to add to the list over the next few months as we have some threads we’re closing out and some other great products we just don’t have room for. Come back often to see what’s been added to the Yard Sale list.

It’s time to start planning for Christmas in July, we’ll have some kind of fun going on each week in July.  Also, each year we host the Customer Gallery in July and that will continue this year. The rule is you can show any project you’ve stitched that hasn’t already been shown in one of our prior Customer Gallery events. We need the pieces here by June 28th to give us time to check them in and get them hung by July 1. Each piece will be photographed and displayed on the website as well as in the shop so that online customers and in the shop customers get a chance to vote on the piece they like best. Gift Certificates will be given for First, Second, and Third place winners. Get your pieces in so you can have a chance to win!

Check out the Home Page for June’s monthly special and watch the Blog in the next couple of weeks. We have a customer who’s doing some really interesting work with specialty threads you’ll enjoy seeing and the Outside the Box group that meets here the 3rd Saturday of the month is doing some really fun things and I’ll take photos and share real soon.

New Classes are in the works, watch for an announcement when they are on the site!

See you soon,

Pat

Busy, busy month! For the first time in quite a while we have a needlepoint Trunk Show in the shop. CanvasWorks/Traditions has sent in some adorable Christmas Stockings and some lovely floral canvases. I’ll be taking photos and posting them to the site a few each day. The show goes home on Friday, February 25 so be sure to check it out while it’s here. We’re offering 15% off the canvases while they’re here. The shopping cart will not show the discount but we will apply it. Of course, best is to just come see!

By the way, the shop will be closed Friday, February 11 and Saturday, February 12 as I need to be in Texas for a SCR meeting.

Just in are the Lizzie Kate and Sweetheart Tree automatics. Click on Cross Stitch and then on each designer to see them. Lizzie Kate has a new Double Flip series called Halloween Rules that is really cute and of course, we’ve set up an automatic for that so you know you’ll not miss a thing. Take a look.

Sweetheart Tree has begun a new series called Quadrielle and I think these are awesome! She has kitted the designs so you get everything you need to complete it except the stuffing and any decorative trims you might want to use to dress yours up. The series will include special occasions and holidays so start your collection now!

We’ve had a surge of new subscribers to these clubs and all are enjoying the excitement of receiving a packet of new threads the first of each month.

Blogs are the thing this year. Here are a couple of new blogs you might want to follow. Most have a Facebook page and are on Twitter as well. Get connected!

September 2010 Newsletter

Lots to talk about this month! The kids are back in school and it’s time to stitch…

To get you started take a look at the next Blog entry, called Ornament Contest. I know it’s scary to think about designing a piece but this is a small ornament where you can play. Grab a piece of 14ct and start doodling. Use Kreinik threads and keep the design round or something that will fit in a round and have fun! I didn’t do the math in the contest announcement but on 14ct the piece needs to fit in a 5-1/4″ circle. Not a big piece but large enough to allow for some detail. Think Christmas with this one.  The best part of participating in this contest is that whether or not you win you can use your design as the entry fee for our 15th Anniversary Celebration. Well, maybe the best part is the $100 of Kreinik threads that’s the Grand Prize or the Gift Certificates to the shop?

Don’t forget that October 15th is the big day, lots of fun activities both in the shop and online and lots of great deals to be had. In order to receive the discounts we’ll offer we need you to send an ornament for the Salvation Army/SAAC Christmas Tree we’ll decorate this year. Get the ornament to us by the 14th so we have time to register it and you’ll be eligible for the discounts! A stitcher who is planning to participate was admiring Rhonda’s finishing techniques on an ornament and wished she knew how to do that kind of work so we’ll plan a finishing class for all the stitched ornaments we receive some time in early November so you’ll have plenty of time to finish yours for this Holiday season. Get stitchin on that ornament!

We found this site and thought it was interesting enough to share. I’m not a math expert and don’t totally understand what he’s talking about with the math part but I did like the stitched piece. This link offers more choices of pieces to create based on math principles. Enjoy!

Reminder, get your Fair entry in by Friday to be sure we can get it framed in time.  We’ve framed some beautiful pieces this summer so this year’s Fair exhibit should be awesome.

Recently we’ve had several customers request different Thread of the Month Club offerings. Take a look at what we offer and let us know what lines you would like to collect and we’ll add them to the list. Over the past couple of years the thread companies have had to increase prices. We’ve tried to hold the line on the prices of the TOMC but in January, 2011 we will have to change the individual collections to reflect the new pricing. The customers who are collecting a line will be able to complete that line at the price they signed on for, only new orders will be at the new price. That means that if you sign up now the entire line is available to you at this year’s price, a real savings over the life of the line! Sign up today and you’ll receive a fun suprise package the first part of each month. Available lines are in the Rainbow Gallery, Caron Collection, Au ver a Soie, brown paper packages, Gentle Art, Weeks Dye Works, ThreadworX, Trebizond, Accentuate, Soy Luster, Barouque Silk, and Bijou line. Plus you can request any other line we carry to build your collection, see them here.

Ok, have to get to the shop and get the next fun thing started but before I go I want to remind you about the Needlework Hideaway. This fall we’ll gather at the Red Apple Inn on November 4th thru the 7th for fun stitching, good company and great food! Still room for you so take a look and register today!

See you soon,

Pat
