I learned this project from Jeanette at Needlework Hideaway Spring 2012 retreat. What a great way to learn new things and see new projects as well as hear some incredible stories!

Thanks Jeanette!

Materials list:

12½” x width of fabric main color

18½” x width of fabric background color (be sure to purchase more than 18″ so you have trim – mine finished 17″ because I didn’t)

2 buttons for trim

Cut fabric. My main color is a stripe that runs the length of the fabric so I purchased 1½ yards and cut it 12½” x 44″ centering the stripes in the 12½” and cutting on the straight of the print rather than the straight of the grain. I trimmed one end after I got the side seams sewn.

With right sides together and using a ¼” seam sew the fabric together on the long sides.

Turn right side out and arrange until the borders are the same width then press.

Fold the piece in half the long way with the main color to the inside of the fold and stitch the ends closed using a ¼” seam.

Open the fold with the flaps to the front and work them out evenly. Fold the points down over the front of the runner and tack them in place or sew the buttons to the points to secure and you’re done! (I made yoyos with the main color and sewed the buttons thru the middle of the yoyo and thru the point to the back of the runner. I like the dimension the yoyo adds.)

Took me more than 10 minutes but it was quick…

Last July I showed you the colors I chose for the Tree of Life pattern from Abi Gurden of Stitch Specialists Yahoo Group. I haven’t had as much time as I would like to stitch on this but I hope you enjoy seeing what’s happening on this fun piece. The theme I chose was to move through the seasons as you move around the tree starting in the lower left part with Winter and moving up into Spring, Summer, and then around to Fall. The color I chose for Winter doesn’t show up in the photo but does show up well on the piece. I really like the way the Fall color is stitching up. I’ll put in another couple of sections in the Winter color and then begin Spring. All my threads are Waterlilies from Caron Collection and the fabric is Weeks Dye Works hand-dyed 30ct fabric. I’m loving stitching with these!

Just a start.

Did you know that you can see what’s new for leaflets each week by logging on to Hoffman Distributing and signing on to their Friday Update? Just click here and then click on E-Newsletter on the left side of the page to sign up. There is no advantage to marking that you’re a shop! Each Friday you’ll receive notice that they’ve posted the Update and you can go there to see what’s new that week.

While you’re on the site take a look at the “Friday Feature” where they interview designers about how they go about creating their work. These interviews are interesting, helping you connect to your favorite designer.

Until next time!

In January last year I posted a picture of a needlepoint American Flag that I stitched for Mr. D and gave an explanation of how I created the piece. Since then he framed the flag and his eagle and it’s been hanging in the shop. Yesterday I realized I’d never shown you what he did with the piece so here it is.

I love this piece!

He did an awesome job of framing this design and including the flag just made it all the better. He has such great ideas about how to compose a piece!

As you probably remember, the flag is stitched on 18m canvas with Trio by brown paper packages and Kreinik Braid. Let me know about pieces you’ve created for unusual applications or just because your best friend wanted it!

When a piece can be stitched by me in a weekend you know it’s a quick to stitch piece. The girls tell me I’m the slowest stitcher they know! Now of course, it was Super Bowl weekend and we spent a good bit of time in front of the TV but I did get this one done from Saturday evening until Monday morning. I stitched for about an hour here with the Saturday Stitchers and then took it home. Fun to stitch and cute, you’ll stitch with Weeks Dye Works and Gentle Art overdyed floss.

This one does not scream Valentine even if it would be perfect for that. We’re putting it in the top of a box Mr. D made and perhaps giving it to one of our girls for a gift! I’ll post a photo when it’s in the box.

See the kits along with a couple more Tracey has designed here. I had a great time with these, they went quickly so I wasn’t overwhelmed but were enough of a challenge to keep me beading! We will have a class in even count Peyote Stitch on Tuesday, March 20th from 10am to Noon or from 2pm to 4pm. You choose one of the kits from the fobs on the Threaded Needle Designs page. Cost of the kit pays your class fee. You need to sign up by Monday March 12th.

We still have room for a few more stitchers at Needlework Hideaway. See the great classes we’re offering this time here.

February 17 and 18 we will be having our “delayed” Christmas Party. As you know we ran out of time in December so we’ve decided to celebrate our great customers with a Party in February. Lots of items on sale, lots! The following weekend is Nashville Market so we need to move out inventory to make room for the new I’ll bring back. Admission to the Party will be a food item to be donated to the Salvation Army. Watch for more information on what will be on sale and how the website customers can participate!

We have a Fern Ridge trunk show here now with the new items we don’t even have on the website yet! Come see…

Lots of interesting things going on in the needlework world recently so I thought I’d share. Big, big news is the results of the auction at Sotheby’s. Read all about it in the New York Times.

Kreinik has some great free patterns you can download. See them on Kreinik’s site.

The needlework world lost a icon in December. Read about this larger than life figure, Erica Wilson again in the New York Times.

Stitcher’s Village is hosting a designer chat with Tracy Horner of Ink Circles on Saturday Jan. 28th at 9pm Eastern. Go to sign up on the Stitcher’s Village site.

Until next time, keep stitching!

We’re back home now and both are starting to feel like the colds we caught on the trip might be on the way out. Not totally fair as I got sick a week before Mr D did but he is quickly catching up with me in his recovery!

Wanted to show you what we saw on our trip. These following photos are the reason we took the trip and the reason we bust our buttons any time anyone wants to know what’s new with us!

This is Kara, the newest Great Grand Child!

And again with her toys!

Kara lives in North Carolina with my Granddaughter, Ashlee and her wonderful husband, Travis. This was our first opportunity to really get to know Travis and we totally understand how Ashlee fell in love with him. What a great guy and an awesome Daddy! Kara is lucky to have parents who have put her squarely in the center of their world. Of course she is a beautiful, easy to love little thing. Just wish the three of them lived here so we could watch her grow.

After North Carolina we traveled to Indiana (just across the river from Louisville) to see another part of our family and spend time with three more of those awesome Great Grands, this time little boys! Gosh, it’s amazing how quickly these guys are growing up. We don’t get to see them nearly enough so each time it’s like meeting them all over again. They are developing into good looking young men we’re all proud of…

Left to right we have Billy, Joey, and Drake!

These boy cousins are lucky to be so close in age that they will grow up to be friends as well as family. Told you they were cute!

And here’s the four generations of Dugan men! Each one more handsome than the next…

Mr D, his grandson James holding great-grandsons Billy and Joey, and his son Dennis.

Our granddaughters, Erin and Brooke, were there as well and as always added to the fun we always have at Dennis and Janet’s. Good food, good fun, good kids, great family!

So, colds or not, we had a wonderful Christmas holiday. I hope you’ll see this and understand that it is a perfect reason for orders being delayed and the shop being closed! We appreciate your understanding and hope you join us in appreciating how important this trip was to us!
